PIR stands for 'Passive Infra Red'.
The PIR can detect an infrared emitting source with one temperature such as the human body that passes in the front of a source with another temperature such as a wall!
The sensor itself does not emit energy, that is why it's called "passive", and the PIR cannot detect non-temperature objects or real motion of an object moving in the front of the sensor. The PIR will sensor rapid temperature changes such as a human passing by, or in case of a fire. They also feature pet immunity to avoid false alarms.
