Summer grilling hits different across the U.S. — the long evenings, the backyard chatter, the smell of something sizzling on the grill. Whether you're cooking for two or feeding the whole neighborhood, great grilling comes down to simple techniques, smart prep, and the right tools.

Get ready for practical tips and tricks that will help you master your grill and impress your guests. From seasoning secrets to timing tips, this guide is all about making your backyard grilling experience better and more flavorful.

Start With the Right Setup

A good grill session starts before the flame ever hits the grate.

  • Preheat your grill for at least 10–15 minutes. This ensures even cooking and helps prevent sticking.
  • Clean your grates while they’re hot — a quick brush now saves you from a headache later.
  • Keep a two –zone setup: one side hot for searing, one cooler for finishing.

Whether you prefer the smoky flavor of charcoal or the convenience of electric, choosing the right grill sets the tone for your cookout. Charcoal grills bring that classic, rich taste with a bit more hands-on heat control, while electric grills offer quick startup and easy temperature management—perfect for patios and apartments. Both have their perks, so pick what fits your style and space best.

Folding X Grill $29.99

If you’re grilling on the go — tailgates, lake days, cabin weekends — the Folding X Grill is a game changer. It folds flat, sets up fast, and cooks like a full-size grill without taking over your trunk.

Build Better Burgers

A great burger is all about consistency.

  • Use cold meat to help patties hold their shape.
  • Don’t overwork the meat — gentle shaping keeps burgers juicy.
  • Press a small dimple in the center to prevent puffing.
  • Season your patties generously with salt and pepper just before grilling.
  • Avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking to keep them juicy and flavorful.

Want to level up? The Stuffed Burger Press Kit (2 Pack) lets you create perfectly shaped patties and load them with cheese, bacon, jalapeños, or whatever your crew loves. It’s the easiest way to turn a backyard burger into a signature dish. And if you’re looking for a local favorite to try, juicy lucy burgers—cheese stuffed right inside the patty—are a crowd-pleaser that brings extra flavor and juiciness to your grill.

Season Like a Pro

Seasoning is where flavor really comes alive.

  • Salt early for deeper flavor.
  • Add pepper and delicate spices later to avoid burning.
  • Try dry rubs for ribs, wings, and pork.

For effortless seasoning, the Electric Grinder Set (3 Piece) gives you fresh ground salt, pepper, and spices with one handed operation. It’s especially handy when you’re flipping, basting, and seasoning all at once.

Keep It Fresh, Cold, and Safe

Food safety matters — especially on hot summer days.

  • Keep raw meats chilled until the moment they hit the grill.
  • Store drinks, marinades, and sides at safe temps.
  • Never reuse marinade that touched raw meat.

The 20 Quart Portable Fridge/Freezer is perfect for backyard hosting, camping, or road trips. It keeps ingredients cold without ice, which means no soggy packaging and no melted mess.

Master Heat & Timing

Different foods need different heat levels.

  • High heat: steaks, kabobs
  • Medium heat: burgers, chicken breasts, brats, veggies
  • Low heat: ribs, roasts, slow cook favorites

Use a thermometer — guessing leads to overcooking. And always let meat rest before slicing.

Grill More Than Meat

grilling corn

Some of the best grillables aren’t meat at all.

  • Corn on the cob with chili–lime butter
  • Pineapple rings for dessert
  • Zucchini, peppers, and mushrooms
  • Flatbreads brushed with garlic oil

Grilling expands your menu and keeps the kitchen cool.

End Strong: Clean & Store

A clean grill lasts longer and cooks better.

  • Brush grates while warm
  • Empty ash or drip trays
  • Oil grates lightly before storing

If you’re using portable gear like the Folding X Grill, let it cool completely before folding and packing.

Member Mary's Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Recipe

A simple, delicious grill recipe shared by Member Mary — proof that great food doesn’t need a long ingredient list or complicated prep.

Ingredients:

  • Chicken Breast
  • Bacon Strips
  • Zesty Italian Dressing

Instructions:

  1. Wrap the chicken breast tightly with bacon strips, using as many needed to cover the surface.
  2. Place the wrapped chicken in a bowl or bag and marinate it in a zesty Italian dressing. Place in the fridge for 1 hour to marinate.
  3. Heat your grill to a medium temp.
  4. Grill the chicken for 12 to 15 minutes per side, or until the bacon is crisp and the chicken is fully cooked through. (Always good to have a thermometer when grilling so you can double check the center of your chicken.)

An extra tip from Mary:

This same method tastes fantastic with duck - rich flavor, and same easy prep.

Grilling Q&A

What temperature should I grill burgers at?

Medium high heat (375–400°F) gives burgers a great sear without drying them out. This heat level allows you to get a nice crust while keeping the inside juicy. Avoid constantly flipping or pressing down on the patties to maintain that perfect texture.

How do I keep food from sticking to the grill?

Preheat fully, clean the grates, and lightly oil the food — not the grill.

What’s the best way to season meat for grilling?

Salt early, add spices later, and use fresh ground seasoning for the best flavor.

How do I safely store food outdoors while grilling?

Use a powered cooler like the 20 Quart Portable Fridge/Freezer to keep ingredients below 40°F.

What’s the easiest grill to take camping or tailgating?

A compact, fold flat model like the Folding X Grill is ideal for travel.
