Ordinary power strips with an on/off switch will turn everything off that is plugged into it and therefore, you will have to be selective as to which device you should plug in.
With this device, you can plug anything you want and turn them off INDIVIDUALLY. Think of a power strip that has an on/off switch for each outlet. So you can plug in your digital clock next to the device you wish to turn off and still know the time. You cannot do that with an ordinary power strip.
Just make sure you know which switch is which or you will find yourself resetting your clock.
